doorly s reptile dysfunction continues to prove itself to be one of the most vibrant and singular labels around, this time tapping up legendary producer jaydee for its latest release. jaydee is a dance music pioneer. best know for the seminal plastic dreams - a track that, somewhat terrifyingly for those who remember it the first time around, will be celebrating its 25 th anniversary next year - he has continued to be a leading light in innovative house and techno productions, releasing on r&s and ellum audio in the last few years. here, he teams up with fellow dance music visionary doorly for a searingly brilliant release on the latter s reptile dysfunction imprint. acid pressure ep presents two original cuts from jaydee, with supporting remixed from doorly and trooko. kicking things off, back into acid opens with stunningly heartfelt pads before building to a killer acid line via shimmering percussion and erotically charged vocal snatches. bring the pressure is more direct: a house roller softened by basic channel-esque chords and with added rhythm courtesy of the accompanying ragga chants. on the remix front, doorly flips back into acid into something far more menacing, with fierce synths stabs and rolling drums creating a head down stomper, while trooko chops back into pressure into pieces, crafting a thumping main room house cut from the constituent parts, complete with an epic, piano-led breakdown.

as with his previous offerings - that have found a home on the likes of red rack’ems smugglers inn, horn wax, ruff draft, plus his co-owned end of label boss imprint – cyclonix continues to explore the deeper and more leftfield spectrum of underground dance music with a futuristic vision. made up of two original tracks, ‘alien drug store’ ep draws on a host of electronic influences ranging from deep house to detroit beatdown, alongside subtle hints of acid house and dub techno, whilst both retain the producers trademark sci-fi aesthetic. the release is completed with a sterling remix of ‘you’d better not’ from a pioneering legend of the uk underground - 4hero’s marc mac, under his nu era guise. heading up the a side is ‘you’d better not’, a slow-grooving techno cut bolstered by punchy kicks and a rubbery bassline, where foreboding sci-fi vox samples are interspersed with dubbed out chords and crunchy offbeat snares, as the arrangement shifts from one mood to another. the sub-aquatic vibes of ‘two face’ follows, which is set to a hypnotic two chord pattern, 4/4 kicks and a lashing of moody synths that gradually entices you into deeper realms through the aid of rippling hi-hats and rhythmic percussion with a submersed quality. on the flip is marc mac’s nu era take on the 12”s lead cut ‘you’d better not’, who transforms the menacing original into a blast of uplifting broken techno, where the soulful musicality of sustained strings and piano chords complement snippets of the original’s vocal sample that drifts atop adept drum programming, bouncy synth bass and a flurry of glistening synth melodies.

moscow based multi-talent impish has been steadily honing his skills working through labels such as program, c.i.a. and his own fast rising occulti music imprint. it’s that last label that saw him release the critically acclaimed “silence” lp back in 2016. fast forward to the autumn of 2017 and a new album project the “hush” lp is set for release through all quality physical electronic music outlets around the world. being the perfectionist that he is, impish continues to impress working on crystal clear music productions where impeccable drum work is combined with organic touches and progressions.

cult duo rework are next up on my favorite robot with a five track ep that shows off their brilliantly inventive house and tech style. the production outfit of daniel varga, michael kuebler deal in left of centre and freaky house with a mischievous afterparty slant. they have been active for more than a decade now and have credits on great labels like visionquest, items & things, meant and the institution that is playhouse. the brilliantly sleazy “talk it off” opens things up with popping drums, playful lyrics and a steely sound that is designed for wonky basement parties. “valencia” goes deeper with warm drums and synths surging along next to an elastic groove that is propped up by energetic and incendiary chord stabs. it’s a subtle but high impact track that will raise the energy levels on any floor. “think about you” has vocals coated in echo and delay and trippy synths that are lively and off kilter. it makes for a track that is brilliantly loose and undulating and cannot fail to get under your skin. final track “attractive” heads in a much more techno direction with surging drums and hypnotic slithering synths that burrow deep into your brain and seep into the night. it is trance inducing for sure, and shows another side to this accomplished outfit. this is a versatile ep stuffed with killer cuts for many different moments in the night, and each is as standout as the next.

we begin our history with the first full-length dada ques release, written and produced by the founder of the label, flaty. called 1 (one or album one), the release is timed with the launch of anwo / amonari-no-word which has been conceived and designed as a creative platform for own musical projects and various other art initiatives. album one presents a wide array of styles grinded and melted into one solid and breathing soundscape, it s electronic romanticism with advanced detail. available sept 15 2017 on heavyweight vinyl.

mister mellow moves further away from the synthesizer-heavy sounds of the recent washed out releases and more band-driven sound of his work on iconic labels sub pop in america, and domino in europe. on mister mellow, greene draws from the experimental collage techniques of musique concrète and plunderphonics artists such as the residents. combining styles as diverse as free jazz, house, hip-hop and psych together with interlude-esque voiceover samples, often pulled from anonymous youtube vlogs, he creates a busy, chaotic, and caricaturish mix that mirrors the claustrophobic, hyper-stimulated psyche so familiar to young adults. as he continues to carve out his innovative sonic identity, influenced by the world around him but unafraid to buck trends, it’s fitting that greene has partnered with legendary hip hop label stones throw records, long a home for beat-loving musical rebels. his approach to releasing music is every bit as individual, too: in an environment where compiling singles into an album format or working with a single video director are the norm, greene has chosen to commission eleven different artists to bring the visual aspect of his fully-realised album project to life. on mister mellow, washed out steers clear of emotion to empathise with the minutiae of the world around him. ive been much less interested in sentimentality and emotion for the past couple of years, says greene, in some ways, i think its a reaction against getting older and having more responsibilities. maybe i’m just nostalgic for a time in my life where i could just relax and block out the world for a moment. though mister mellow is an intensely personal album, its ideas and observations speak to the lived experience of so many young adults, an experience that we come to see as both funny and sad.

drumcode continues its commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge techno. with releases this year already from adam beyer, pig&dan, alan fitzpatrick, dense & pika and julian jeweil, this july sees the return of enrico sangiuliano with astral projection. after his remix of mobys of why does my heart feel so bad back in november last year, enrico sought creative inspiration from his travels, transcending that into his productions and long studio sessions during the winter months. the result brings a mind and body melting release from the italian producer. the title track astral projection is a captivating, big room techno masterpiece. deep reverberations punch alongside a sinisterly crisp percussive drive. launching into a groove laden synth modulation of low end textures, it breaks down into an ethereal amalgamation of pads and synths before the vocal launches, taking this track to another level. ‘blooming era has destructive dancefloor intent. there is no holding back with the low end synth modulation which enrico has mastered to perfection. a tightly woven percussive flare moulds flawlessly with the rolling oscillations of the beast of this track. if you have seen label head honcho adam beyer playing anywhere on the globe in the last 5 months, this has been a peak time favourite. road-tested to the max, and with much success.

with the second release noland tracks moves from nigeria to poland: non human persons saturn melancholia is an early song of the polish band based on guitar & voice + processor, recorded in warsaw some years ago. with their remix gebrüder teichmann turned the song into a sacral techno anthem. a deep and dark trip with nico in the heart and mdma in the blood. the b-side features the original track plus a beautiful hand carved image by brenda alamilla.

fourth chapter of the italian label dancing like quagmire. dlq s ever growing family welcomes polish newcomer primo ultimo and italian duo calma (sorry for this records owners and harmonized residents) as remixers. fasten your seatbelts and you ll fly away into a cosmic journey through space and time riding primo ultimo s flight simulator. flight safety instructions: a1 is the title-track born to be an helpful party banger with its uzi-like snares and overwhelming synths. in a2 again the flight simulator but slow down time, thanks to calma s analog arsenal the sound gets deeper and warmer. on the flip side the b1 is azure vibes a clapping tropical house jam with breakbeat reminiscences. the final destination of this trip is the b2 bilbao where equilibrium and melody are king and queen remembering that joy is an electronic thing.

with his newest ep goa tee, moscoman finds himself seven releases deep into his 12 part treisar series. living up to its name, the seventh piece of the puzzle is the trippiest of the series yet, kicking off with some of my fears, a piece if outer space hypnosis carried by a rolling percussion and bass combo that will keep firmly stomping across dancefloors. reflecting the mood set on the a side, moments in space sees moscoman channel his italo flair while reaching out for a rave indebted sonic palette. final track chinchilla closes on delirious sounds and 8 bit melodies rubbing shoulders with a lovingly syncopated beat. a weapon all exotically inclined djs will be reaching out for a their next jungle party.

the second release in endless illusion s series of split eps comes from marcos cabral & daniel araya and features two tracks from each artist. new york s cabral is known for his experimental idm and techno on labels like l.i.e.s. while daniel araya has recently released an album of acid, techno and industrial on the classicworks label. araya s we almost lost detroit is first and is a truly haunted deep techno cut with sparse acid undulations and a real sense of manic in the rasping synth lines. softer pads in the background only add to the spooky nature of the track. ghost bass is the other araya cut and this one is more up on its toes, with mid tempo kicks down low and wonky chords up top. it s a mind melting tune that trips deep into the night. live at the egg is cabral s first effort and is a lonely and icy techno track that is supple and seductive in its long lines and paddy drums. after getting you into a state of hypnosis, some freaky vocal sounds only add to the unsettling nature of it all later on. cuts & bruises rounds things out in squelchy and depraved techno territory. muted acid stabs are off in the distance as swampy drums suck you in from the front. it s a brilliantly odd tune that close out a fine ep.

dutch maestro reimer eising returns with a new lesson in high class braindance electronica for analogical force. just one year on from the inspiring wingtip album on clone records and many (like us) have been looking forward to his new stuff, now the wait is over. alacasa , the result of months of work, sees reimer delving into his unique world of delicate drum patterns, kaleidoscopic synths, 4/4 beats and breaks, acid-tinged melodies, ghostly pads...blah blah blah... kettel has presented us with all of these things before but never with such immaculate care and attention to detail, production and pacing. he has never sounded better and fresher than this. the ep includes a dreamy and evocative remix from swedish hero rolando simmons, pure bliss to get lost in. no more words are needed, you know what to do.

once again, perm has turned just the right knobs to give you the perfect soundtrack for your personal journey into techno wonderland. the leipzig based wizard simply knows how to leave dancers both dizzy and beatific. when those strings in -03-viii- come together to its climax you re more than ready to embrace the night. the focus in -03-iv- is more heavy on the drum work with just the right amount of subtle tripping hazards. -03-iii- builds and builds without ever bubbling over while the mighty -03-viii- comes with a boom-tschak-electro feel to it. the artwork comes courtesy of carl-johannes schulze.

after a successful year with releases on cocoon, cadenza and get physical, gavin herlihy teams up with brothers in crime evan baggs (get physical) and julian ganzer (get physical, meerestief), to deliver a sci-fi soundscape which bounds into a banging bassline driven groove. doing the honours on the remixes are chris carrier and e-contact (half of gimikk), chris turns the track into a funky house tune, while e-contact adds a more of a chicago groove feeling to the track.

wrapping up the summer with a bit of a 90s throwback number by st. david, &#8203,, * fools jam* . the ep opens with the titual track, a crunchy, crisp deep house burner, and moves on, with night lovers, into speedier, smoother floor-filling fodder that’s all wiggling, weaving pads and synth leads. the b is a little gentler and more contemplative, but no less melodious dream it (emphasi mix) is a playful yet gauzy piano-led tune that serenades the listener, and la luna (spiritual dub) is a tranquil ditty that serenely glides off into the distance. a calming, mellow conclusion to a particularly emotive 12inch.

this september will see visionquest return with alexi delano’s ‘water colors’ ep, accompanied by a remix from the persuader aka jesper dahlba&#776,,ck. chilean born, swedish raised, new york adopted and amsterdam based producer and dj alexi delano has an impressive back catalogue dating back over two decades and featuring releases on labels such as laurent garnier’s f communications, richie hawtin & john acquaviva’s plus 8, ghostly international’s spectral sound and m_nus as well as visionquest where he returns to here following his collaborative ‘the breeze’ ep alongside label co-founder shaun reeves in 2013. title-track ‘water colors’ opens the release, a smooth and gradually unfolding composition fuelled by an amalgamation deftly programmed multi-layered melodies which ebb and flow throughout the sturdy rhythmic foundation. following is the persuader’s take on ‘water colors’ which dubs things out to create a murky submerged feel in contrast, utilizing the original’s hypnotic melodies whilst subtly working in a rugged 303 line throughout. ‘communicate’ then rounds out the package with a groove-led feel, bringing a squelching acid bass, hooky vocal chop and modulating synth flutters into the limelight as the shuffled dynamic drum machine workout carries things along

it had been four years since juxtaposition, radians last record. chimeric is not a polished album. within the context it is raw, broken, even dark sometimes. steady, multiple rhythms, layered on top of each other disappear into chaos and turn back into discreet structures in the next moment. references of rock music, executed with the precision of a sequencer, mutated, restructured. a lot on this album is about control and the loss of control. the risk of failure. but chimeric is much more free. some of the longer pieces are composed of very different parts and different colours along a continuous timeline. they tend to evolve in a narrative form and are moving through various scenes and surroundings, which is also present in the spacial relationship between the instruments.

the first methxx release of the year comes from andy skopes with his exquisite speechless ep. were taken on a journey through andys musical brain, with diversions into the rugged breaks of seance and the aural paradise that is heroin wash, which are just two of four perfectly crafted pieces of drum and bass on offer. the atmosphere and energy across the ep is weighted perfectly, whilst every track almost sounds effortless in the way it’s been put together, something that andy has mastered and can now proudly show off

charlie ahearn s 1983 film wild style holds a place in both music and cinematic history as one of the first examples of a hip-hop film. since its original release it has been widely praised for its hybrid approach as both a narrative musical and a documentary, and as a time capsule of sorts into the culture of hip-hop during its infancy in the 1980s.

u-roy was a true reggae pioneer, dubbed the originator for good reason. bursting onto the jamaican scene in the early 1970s, he pioneered the vocal approach called “toasting,” which in addition to bringing jamaican music into a new era, was also heavily influential on an american vocal style also in its infancy: rapping. following up the record store day 2017 release of u-roy’s classic dread in a babylon, traffic entertainment group now brings us a very welcome reissue of the vocalist’s 1976 full-length (and fourth) album, natty rebel, which has been out of print for more than 30 years. produced by tony robinson (known for his work with big youth, lloyd parks, the gladiators and many more), the album’s 11 cuts range from bouncier and sometimes even disco-tinged grooves – “have mercy,” “go there natty” and the album lead-off, “babylon burning” – to the classic roots stepping that drew fans to the legendary jamaican vocalist over his long career – including “so jay jah say” and “natty kung fu.” at its core, this is a deep journey into the heart of rasta living, spoken by one of jamaica’s most underrated dub and roots legends, and it’s one of the strongest full-lengths in his expansive catalog. whether you are experiencing u-roy for the first time, or replacing your decades-old original lp, diving into this reissue of natty rebel is one hell of a way to spend an afternoon. or, if you’re not careful, a week or two.

raoul k is known for blending the sounds of real westafrican instruments and modern electronic clubsounds into one mesmerizing soundscape. this time, he takes a new approach: the original mix is produced without the use of any electronic instrument. just pure african sounds, chopped and melted together into one groovy slice of contemporary clubmusic. this is the first release in a series celebrating the tenth year of baobab music… which will lead to a new raoul k album. electronics aren’t completely left out. the blending, however, was left to the remixers this time: irfan adds a good measure of energy in his mix, setting up some analog synths with raoul’s beats. watch out for the break… kaito delivers a very dreamy remix which seems to lose its kickdrum but does not lose its groove. dance into the sunrise. choose vinyl, please

super tuff makes an impressive debut straight out of brooklyn with m. vaughan at the helm, and it looks like high grade deep house is on the menu judging by the quality spread across this first 12inch. jesse bru is up first with the steady cruising futaki, featuring a great speech by tom waits about crooked trees. dj aakmael gets into a bouncier concoction on offering, and then it s down to label boss vaughan to push an agenda of tough nyc flavoured grooves splashed with dusty soul and jazz tones in an utterly infectious style. moony me then finishes off the ep with an acid track that features swooning strings and some deft drum play.

shanghai based, altieri second release on slow motion and it is an absolute belter. an insane mix of acid and middle eastern influences that punches its way to the cerebral cortex and takes no prisoners. sure to any drive any discerning dance floor into overdrive, spazio terra is backed up with a peak-time remix from the man that always can fabrizio mammarella.

lossless music’s leftfield sublabel exkursions is back with its second vinyl release. exkur002 features the incredible talent of james morton aka concealed identity. after hearing james’ 12” on narratives soul intent tracked james and proposed james remix “no answers” which is did in amazing style. james also offered up a stunning brand new solo track called “zahir”, a 7 minute journey into cinematic 170bpm. soul intent finishes up the 12” with a 140bpm garage/bass music monster called “tribes” via odyssia alias.

following on a trio of successes with established talent, for our fourth release manhigh takes an excursion to lesser-known regions with experimentalist desroi. previously known from eps on his eponymous imprint and total black the german newcomer quickly caught our attention. beginning with the opener, ‘indifferent’, we are introduced to his heavily sculpted, hypnotic sound world, where a rolling, repeating rhythmic framework is echoed in the higher registers with heavily-filtered delay loops, and a melodic lead line taken deeply into dub provides both a centerpiece and the basis for many other elements. another relatively new talent currently rising quickly to wider notice, phase fatale’s relaunch of ‘indifferent’ stays resolutely in his own world, a grinding, banging amalgamation of distortion, punishing in its resolve and propelled by mutated elements of the desroi’s original piece. his idea of ‘apathy’ invokes entirely more aggressive emotions than the word’s conventional usage, tightly winding bleeps around a rigid sequence kept in motion by constant effects and sporadic drum hits, which then transforms at is halfway point with the entrance of harder kicks driven by an open hat. ‘sopor’ induces trance states more than it does sleep, sophisticated applications of delay effects and patient acid combine for a deep, inward-looking hypnotic state with momentary shifts in rhythm and color evoking the ephemeral nature of dreams.

* the production duo behind the rave-new world sounds of turbo mitzi and big slug (feat. riko dan) have been busy in the studio recently and return to form with 2 killer cuts designed to shock out the dancefloor. * ’control’ picks up the tempo from the duos previous cuts, rolling at 140 beats per minute, in it’s apocalyptic form. powerful pads create the tension before sub-heavy kicks and cybernetic snares come pounding and chopping in, building up the mood before a radioactively charged reese-bassline emerges, rising to the surface, unleashing its terror. this is a stone-cold banger. * strobe light’ returns to the more familiar 128bpm tempo that the pair have previously worked with. taking a quite unique approach, ‘strobe light’ builds evermore, moving into the light, layering percussion up as an intoxicating drone of swirling strings swells and swells - entrancing and empowering in equal measures. this is a highly versatile dj tool that also makes for an engrossing listen from start to finish. refined dancefloor ear candy. dj support: mary ann-hobbs. modeselector, daniel avery.

following the blistering inaugural release from talker comes the second release on the standards & practices imprint from label co-founder jonathan -stave- krohn, who returns with 5 tracks of dark, visceral electronic music for the discerning listener. -black hills- and -tasc us- kick off the proceedings in fine style – pummeling drums underpinning harsh blasts of noise and bleak, greyscale atmospherics, while -in/human- and -b5- on the flip take a different approach – 2 tracks not aimed at the dancefloor, but both retaining that cold, claustrophobic feel that characterizes much of stave s work. the brooding and sinister -stave 17- closes the ep, moving into exciting new territory with an intensely cinematic sound.

hugo capablanca may be best known for his more disco-minded output from his time on gomma records, but increasingly his scattered output and his label have been reaching towards more abrasive material. nothing will prepare you for the confrontational nature of this daring, no label transmission. the artwork alone is enough to challenge the senses, while the opening track is a metallic drone that gives way to the distended mutant beats of top less. guy debord is no less cut throat in delivering a disco punish remix of lap dance on the b side, all deconstructed groove and guttural noise, and then dance less rounds the record off with another excursion into unsettling, heavily processed noise.

shdw002 arrives with a pumping kick and a gorgeous guitar loop. as the filter opens, the landscape widens – laidback percussion, then soothing strings, before a powerful hit of bass and vocals, and we’re off. two tail’s ‘willie has a hunch’, grooves along blissfully, before a spoken word sample comes to twist the meaning and flip the mood. ‘you’ve got me’, is an appropriate title for a harry parsons track where a percussive groove, staccato horns, and those handclaps grip the listener and never relinquish control the result being a thoroughly enjoyable 6 minutes of communal dancefloor goodness.
tribal percussion ushers in side b, as alex wooley begins to build ‘walkin’ away’ around a yearning and disheartened vocal sample. despite the free-flowing instrumentation, the vocals maintain a subtle air of melancholy, which anchor this track in raw, remorseful emotion. mr lover lover concludes proceedings with a confident swagger. ‘i would (like to get to know)’ flips brandy’s ‘i wanna be down’ into an enticing dancefloor shaker - the perfect closer.

the imprint of the french man lazare hoche returns with some super hot cuts
little is known about medicis, other than he last appeared back in 2015 on lazare hoche alongside voltery. on this, his second 12-, he strikes out on his own for the parisian deep house stable with some of that refined, head-tweaking groove fodder that has broadly defined the label since it started. -vilaroel- features shimmering tones that call to mind point g at his dubbiest, while -dissfreq- takes a sweeter route into dreamy pads and lightly shuffling drums. -carrier- is a darker, techier affair with plenty of hypnotic elements spinning in the mix, and then mdecisi old friend voltery lands a hand on the downtempo delights of -guda-.

rude operator’s dissonant intro on witchdoctor synthesizes a half-time beat with jazz undertones before bouncing into a percussive bassline. constantly evolving drum patterns, punctuated with horn bursts and upright bass from ornette hawkins, keep the dance floor moving.
gunman’s blissed-out atmospherics pave the way for a heavy combination of chopped up breakbeats and a juked-out drumline. equally influenced by early jungle and contemporary footwork, 808 percussion and congas punctuate the undulating bassline.
arrowhead fuses dubbed out elements with a running apache break and ominous synths. percussive vocal stabs propel the song forward, while a deep, driving bassline and amen cuts bring the pressure.
war diamond pays homage to dc’s indigenous sound, go-go. a hypnotic conga drum workout rinses oscillating bass with nature sounds, taking you above the canopy with a relentless swing. lightly toasted by born i music, this fresh take on jungle delivers a heavy, tribal perspective.
